NUCLEAR POWER – INDUSTRY REBOUND OR MELTDOWN?

Amidst a resurgence of interest in nuclear power for its carbon-free characteristics, the crisis in Japan has again raised our fears about nuclear power.  To help us understand implications of this turn of events, a local expert will review the facts about nuclear power.  How do nuclear plants make electricity?  What are the byproducts?  What caused prior nuclear plant disasters?  Has anything changed?  How will the next generation of nuclear plants operate?  What can we do with spent nuclear fuel?  What is the environmental impact of a nuclear power plant?  Does nuclear power have a future?

Speaker:           Stephen Frantz has been the Director of the Reed College 250 kW TRIGA Research Reactor since April 1994. He has worked in the nuclear industry at plants across the U.S. and overseas. He also served several years as an officer on a nuclear ballistic missile submarine. Stephen has a BA in Physics from Shippensburg University and an MBA from Heriot-Watt University. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and a Certified Health Physicist.
