2013 State Legislature – Outlook for Sustainability

The 2013 Oregon State Legislature – Outlook for Sustainability

Briefing by Senator Jackie Dingfelder and Representative Jules Bailey

In this period of tepid economic recovery, with Democrats now a majority in both the Oregon House and Oregon Senate, what are the prospects for significant 2013 legislation related to sustainability?  Two highly respected legislators share their views as they depart for Salem to wrestle in earnest with the myriad issues facing a state with a strong Governor enjoying great popularity.  Senator Dingfelder and Representative Bailey will report on prospects for initiatives to promote sustainability and those that might be viewed as setbacks for sustainability advocates.

Senator Jackie Dingfelder, in her twelfth year in the legislature, is the Chair of the Senate Environment and Natural Resource Committee.  Recipient of the 2011 Environmental Champion of the Year Award from the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, Senator Dingfelder holds a Master’s Degree in Regional Planning and is the new Executive Director of River Restoration Northwest.

Representative Jules Bailey, first elected to the legislature in 2008, will likely serve again in 2013 as Chair of the House Energy Environment and Water Committee.  Named Innovator of the Year in 2009 and 2011 by the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, Representative Bailey holds a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs and Urban and Regional Planning and runs Pareto Global, an economic consulting practice.
