Economic Growth, Natural Capital and Sustainability

An economy’s productive capacity is   dependent on four general forms of capital–physical, human, social and   natural.  Focusing on the Pacific   Northwest, this program will discuss the importance of economic growth, how   natural capital contributes to economic growth and what it means for an   economy to grow sustainably.


Ed   Whitelaw  is the founder of ECONorthwest and a Professor of Economics at University of   Oregon, where he has taught since 1967.     He   specializes in urban and regional economics, resource and environmental   economics, and the economic consequences of policy decisions. He has   testified before administrative, legislative, congressional, and judicial   bodies on a variety of economic issues and has over 40 years experience   working with the economic aspects of sustainability.

Bryce Ward received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University and has taught courses in labor economics, microeconomic theory, public finance, econometrics, environmental and natural resource economics, and social economics at Harvard College, Lewis and Clark College, Portland State University, and the University of Oregon. Since joining ECONorthwest in 2005, he has been involved in a variety of matters relating primarily to urban, labor, and environmental and natural resource economics.
