The Law of Methane – Capture and Power the Next Generation

September 20, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and a key by-product of the natural gas we use for heating, cooking and electricity. Other sources of methane come from digestive processes of livestock and from landfills. This program will give Oregon attorneys an overview of the law of methane – how it is regulated, not regulated, and how they can help clients (including pro bono clients) generate and use methane as renewable natural gas. As part of the conversation, we’ll focus on tradable credits from renewable natural gas, transactions involving buyers and sellers, and permitting facilities that produce renewable natural gas. Lawyers will also learn how laws influence the use of methane as a stationary and transportation fuel, and trends on regulation of methane as a greenhouse gas in Oregon and other states.

Speaker: Dan Avery is a senior renewable energy policy analyst with the Oregon Department of Energy who works with public and private interests to help advance renewable energy opportunities and their supporting policy. Dan has worked on energy and natural resource issues in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years and has worked in federal, state and private industry.  He has worked in regulatory, conservation and public planning arenas.
